Finding Free Elementary School Tutoring

Finding Free Elementary School TutoringWhen it comes to getting free elementary school tutoring, it can seem as if everything is out of reach. The new curriculum is demanding, the student body can be difficult, and the public schools have so many other things to offer. The trick is finding a reliable source of elementary school tutoring that will give you the money you need to pay for the services. Here are a few tips that will help you get a good deal. For young students, go to tutoring services offered by daycare centers, and private homes. You will have to pay for the private school fees, but they usually won't require their students to work at home. You may also be able to use a babysitter that you hire for the day, so all of your work will be done in the house. If you want to stay at home while attending public schools, then make sure you don't pick a lower quality class. There are plenty of companies out there that provide tutoring for free. However, many of them will require tha t you work at home so that they can help with the work load. If you want to maintain an adequate education level, avoid these types of schools. If you want to keep your grades up while working at home, you should take the time to find a tutor who is a good job, has good references, and is committed to helping you get better. Make sure you feel comfortable working with the teacher before you sign on the dotted line. You should also research whether the teacher has any other experience or is certified. You don't want to put your child at risk.If you have a special needs child, you may be able to get a great deal, but you should shop around for a new teacher. One way to do this is to ask a friend who has a special needs child what they think. The reviews you get may be less biased than the results of your own research. In addition to the advice mentioned above, you should have a calendar of dates for your kids to go to school, a place to stay while you are on a business trip, and a budge t that includes the cost of food and the cost of fees. There should be a list of things that you need for your home as well, such as paper, stamps, erasers, pencils, etc.It is a nice bit of personalization to have your own calendar. It shows you exactly how far along you are in the process of getting the schoolwork completed. It may even make the teacher consider giving you some extra attention!

Get Your Breathing Right The Foundation for Good Singing

Get Your Breathing Right The Foundation for Good Singing Sign up successful The more space there is available in the bottle, the more room the sound has to roam, which leads to fewer vibrations per second. The fewer vibrations per second, the lower the frequency of the tone. The less space there is available in the bottle, the less room the sound has to roam, which leads to more vibrations per second. The greater vibrations per second, the higher the frequency of the tone. As for the effort of air exerted, this has to do with producing enough air to achieve the greater number of vibrations required to create a tone in such a limited amount of space. Now, let’s consider how this concept applies to your vocal cords. You inhale and exhale. Once the exhaled air reaches your vocal cords, it is met with either a wide or narrow aperture. Sing a low note â€" your vocal cords are configured wide. Sing a high note â€" now they’re configured narrow. And just like the bottle, the less space available in your vocal cords, the more vibrations per second. This means that the higher you sing, the more air that is required! This is one of the reasons why singers report more difficulty singing high notes as opposed to low â€" high notes require more air than what your regular speaking voice calls for. So, we’ve established that we need to have access to a lot of air. The next step is figuring out the most effective way to produce that air. Breathing exercises for singing are essential for this. Check out the video below for some specific exercises you can do, and then keep reading for more vital techniques to consider. 3 Simple Tips for Proper Breathing 1. Breathe to expand, not to raise. A common tendency among new singers is to fill up with air vertically instead of horizontally. Take a deep breath and sing a phrase of a song. Did you shoulders move? If so, you are pushing a good amount of that valuable air into your shoulders, where it has absolutely no use to you. Locate your diaphragm below your chest and above your belly â€" buried behind muscle, but detectable when you notice your chest expanding on the inhale. The goal is to direct all your inhale air into your balloon-like diaphragm â€" not your shoulders. 2. Now, expand your breathing capacity. Pacing yourself, inhale for a count of four so that your diaphragm is fully extended, then exhale for a count of four so that your diaphragm returns to rest. Repeat the exercise for a count of eight, and then for a count of 16. You’re expanding your breathing capacity while training your muscles to ration out the available air â€" an important tool for singing phrases of varying lengths. 3. Add a tone. Repeat the same exercise as #2, but this time, allow your voice to create an easy, free-flowing and descending tone for the duration of the exhale. It should sound like the descent of a siren blaring in the distance. You are now teaching your vocal cords to sync with your air supply. Breathing exercises for singing work well at the beginning of your regular vocal warm-ups. If you’re having trouble figuring out the right way to breathe, a voice teacher can observe your process and help you identify the breathing muscles you need to utilize. You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to achieve your vocal goals when you just learn to breathe! Ben M. teaches music performance  and  singing  in Glendale, CA. Colleges Offering Tuition Guarantees

Colleges Offering Tuition Guarantees In attempts to attract prospective students, many colleges across the nation are promising incoming freshmen that their tuition rates will not rise during their four years in college, according to an article in The US News World Report. All public universities in Illinois and several other public and private colleges throughout the nation are locking freshmen tuition rates. However, these schools are raising separate fees such as housing, meal plans and other various costs. Also, these colleges are increasing the tuition rates that each incoming freshmen class will pay, without changing the tuition for returning sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students and parents will save an estimated $5,000 by attending a four-year college that locks tuition, according to the article. Colleges are implementing these tuition guarantees because they are in strict competition with each other to boost enrollment. When colleges compete over students, costs tend to decrease. Students and parents still need to pay close attention to college tuition rates because most universities revenues are down due to the tough economy. Some colleges are luring freshmen in with tuition locks and guarantees; however these colleges are dramatically increasing the tuition rates for each incoming freshman class. Some of these tuition spikes are so significant that students and parents actually pay more for attending a certain college that boasts tuition guarantees. Students and parents need to closely analyze the tuition and other costs of attending college because financial administrators at colleges can skew the tuition and other costs. Universities will offer tuition guarantees and large amounts of financial aid to appear cost-effective. However, students can still overpay for college, compared to other schools. The US News World Report stated that the public universities in Illinois are very affordable because they are not deceiving students with their tuition guarantees by overinflating tuition. Traditionally, these tuition guarantees only apply to four-year degrees. Students who attend college for five or more years will not have their tuition locked after their fourth year.

Should I Go To The University of Arizona

Should I Go To The University of Arizona The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Jennifer is a junior at The University of Arizona majoring in Physiology. She specializes inmany subjects in Tucson including World History tutoring, Psychology tutoring, Chemistry tutoring, and more. See what she had to say about her school: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Jennifer: The campus is in the middle of Tucson, which is a larger town in Arizona, but the campus has never felt unsafe in anyway! There are many things that the university does to keep its students safe, from maintaining a large campus police to having a program called SafeRide. SafeRide will drop you off at locations during the night if you feel unsafe, and it will also pick you up!Tucson's bus system is called the SunTran, and its routes are extremely extensive and will drive you to all corners of the city. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Jennifer: Every teacher and TA is required by the school to have set office hours in which students can come in and receive help. Usually, even if those hours interfere with other plans, teachers are willing to schedule extra office hours to meet up. Advisors are harder to get a hold of, as you have to make a specific appointment in advance, but they are definitely accessible. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Jennifer: Dorm life is the best! There are at least 20 dorms on campus, all ranging in price, size, and location. It is a great way to make friends, and they're extremely convenient. You don't have to pick any certain meal plan if you live in the dorm; meal plans are sold separately. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Jennifer: The University of Arizona has a broad spectrum of majors, a lot of which are nationally ranked. I am currently studying Physiology, an extremely unique major to the college.I am studying Physiology because I believe it will give me the best background to go into medicine. The university supports every student in whatever they desire to be. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Jennifer: It was extremely easy for me to make friends on campus, as I was living in the dorms and became close to all of my neighbors.Greek life does play a big role in our campus, with about 30% of students being in Greek life. However, it is certainly not necessary to be involved in Greek life. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Jennifer: The most important thing we have on campus is called the Think Tank.It supports students with student-to-student tutoring, and it has really helped me through tough times in some of my classes! It's also cool because many teachers hold their office hours in the Think Tank, so you can get help from them there, too. As for recruiting opportunities, the university holds job fairs at least twice a semester. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Jennifer: I love the libraries we have on campus! The most popular libraries we have are the Main Library and the Science Engineering Library, but we also have a Medical Library and an Art/Music Library. They are all very spacious, even though they definitely tend to get crowded around finals time. My favorite part about the libraries is getting my own individual study room; it allows me to concentrate better! VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Jennifer: Tucson is a medium-sized town with a lot of random things to do. I would say that in general, students tend to stay around campus, just because there are more student-oriented things to do. University Street and Fourth Avenue are big hang out spots, as they have restaurants, bookstores, clothing stores, and more. The downtown area isn't real big in Tucson, but they are attempting to renovate it, and soon enough, a streetcar will run from the university to downtown. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jennifer: The university is quite large, with over 30,000 students.I knew this going into college, and it was what I wanted! It gives you an opportunity to meet a lot of new people. Some of the classes tend to be large, but you can definitely find many that are 20-30 students, especially Language courses. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jennifer: One of my most memorable teachers was for Calculus 1.I had a graduate student teacher, named George! He was pretty much the most amazing math teacher ever, especially because I am a terrible math student.I constantly went in for help in his office hours, and I finally was able to progress, and advance at the end of the semester! He always made class fun, and it made me like math more! Check out Jennifers tutoring profile. The views expressed in this article do not necessarily represent the views of Varsity Tutors.

The Writing Process Its Actually a Process!

The Writing Process It's Actually a Process! Improving Academic Performance When a paper is looming, it can be easy to get into absolutes and assume that, unless you can get something really fantastic down in the next couple of hours, you’re doomed. But let’s remember the old adage Rome wasn’t built in a day - and neither was your essay, short story, or research project. All good writing comes from rewriting. Even the greatest writers on earth will admit that their first drafts and ideas were often lackluster. Sometimes downright terrible. So don’t be discouraged. Be willing to write poorly, and then be willing to improve! (Remember that growth mindset!) It’s always best to start with some free writing, which used to be called brainstorming, to get your ideas down first. This can be done in a variety of ways, depending on the type of learner and writer you are. Some people benefit from diagrams and jotting notes, others outlines, and some (like me) get right to business writing paragraphs to then go back to edit and rearrange. You can even get creative and use apps on your iPhone! (Just, avoid texting.) Let your ideas flow. Don’t censor yourself. A good rule of thumb is to set a timer for fifteen minutes and to continue writing (or typing) for that entire stretch. Don’t worry during this brainstorming session if your ideas make sense or are good enough or are written in gorgeous prose. Just get the ideas flowing. This might be the place where you develop an interesting thesis statement or main idea or where you solidify several ideas to support your argument. If you are a procrastinator, I recommend that you follow a strategy I used all through high school, college, and graduate school when I had giant papers assigned to me: start right away. I don’t mean write the whole thing right away. I just mean start. Ten minutes. Or two. Even if you only open a document and write a heading and a first sentence, this will help tremendously, because you will feel you have at least gotten your foot in the door. It takes some mental pressure off, and you will find you are more inclined to return to the document regularly over the coming weeks before turning in a rough or final draft. There won’t be a paper you haven’t even started hanging over your head. You’ll say to yourself, I’ve got my thesis or a paragraph down! It’s a great motivational tool and a stress reliever. Once you’ve got your main ideas down in note, outline, or free writing form, hunker down and dig in. Again, set a timer, for thirty minutes to ninety minutes (or in other increments that work for you) and commit to writing for that entire stretch. Again, don’t worry so much if your writing feels shaky or “bad” - just write. Do this several times until you have what we call a rough or first draft. This means you have transformed notes and outlines into full sentences and paragraphs. You have structure to what you’ve written, whether that means a beginning, middle, and end of a story, or five paragraphs that help argue a solid thesis statement. With this rough draft, the refinery process can take place, and this is where some real magic happens. I recommend first that you allow a teacher (if applicable) to review your draft and provide feedback. A peer editor can also be helpful, but make sure it is someone you trust to read carefully and closely and who understands the objective of your writing piece. The last editor is you. Once you have your feedback and notes and the areas to remove or expand upon, enter the final phase, which requires close reading and the willingness to “kill your darlings” and tidy up each sentence in your work. Killing your darlings means you part with the words, sentences, or paragraphs that for some reason you really like but that you understand are not supporting the writing piece. As stated in an article on BusyTeacher, less is often more, especially in formal essay writing. And we don’t want to clog a story or narrative with unnecessary adjectives and adverbs or cliched metaphors. We want to tidy up run-on sentences. We want to say what we mean succinctly. We want strong verbs and eloquent prose, but we never want our writing to sound “fluffy.” Aim true. Kill off the words you don’t need. It feels great, trust me, like getting rid of clothes in your closet you never wear! Once you have done a few rounds of close editing on your own and feel you have made the writing the best it can be, let go. Surrender. Feel proud. And walk away. If you’re really dedicated and have the time, revisit it again with fresh eyes in a day or two. But don’t get into the habit of nitpicking something to death from a place of anxiety and criticism. Be proud that you went through a tried and true writing process. You’ll know when you’ve really given it your all! Educational summer activities the wonder of wildlife

Educational summer activities the wonder of wildlife Exam season is nearly over and the summer holidays are but a pipsqueak away. If you're dreading weeks of boredom in your household, don't worry. It needn't be this way! The UK is full of places to enjoy an educational day out, and each week we'll recommend our pick of the bunch. Our very first recommendation for you is the London Wetland Centre. For anyone who thinks that wildlife can't survive, let alone thrive, in the ultimate urban environment, the London Wetland Centre is here to prove them wrong. Head to the LWC and you'll find a lively nature haven in the heart of the city with beautiful walkways set amongst lakes, ponds, meadows and reedbeds. It plays home to a wide variety of wildlife, with more than 180 species of birds, water voles, amphibians, bats, grass snakes, slow worms, butterflies and moths to gaze at. This is a must-visit for any mini Attenboroughs with an interest in Biology, especially if they live in the city and rarely get to see wildlife close up. In fact, the LWC has six hiding spots to allow visitors to get up close to the wildlife. There is also a collection of rare birds to see, an adventure area for younger children, a bat house and a duck pond where you can feed the ducks (this makes a nice change from many parks, where duck-feeding is banned). For more information on the London Wetland Centre visit www.wwt.org.uk/london
